IGmiddelkerke route

You can explore the most beautiful spots in Middelkerke thanks to the IGmiddelkerke route!

Mighty Middelkerke photographers have composed a bicycle route that passes by the spots where you can take the most beautiful pictures in Middelkerke. These range from the beach to the winding hinterland roads, to the monumental Beaufort artworks, to the WWII bunkers, to the picturesque landscapes of the hinterland. Everyone is invited to take photos along the route and share them on social media with #IGmiddelkerke.

The photographers of Machtig Middelkerke determined the route

The project Mighty Middelkerke is a project in which amateur photographers put photos they took in Middelkerke at the disposal of the municipal services. These photos will be included in municipal publications and promotional campaigns.

With a selection of these submissions, a bicycle route through Middelkerke was mapped out. The cycle route was 41.5 km long. If you don't feel like cycling such a big tour, it can be shortened to 30 km or even 26.5 km, without missing out on many beautiful places.

The Mighty Middelkerke photographers whose photos are included in the IGmiddelkerke route are Jos Thorrez, Eric Lefevere, Chloé Vandeweghe, Ludo Coulier, Patrick Bielen, Anne-Laure Proot, Johan Lambert, Luc Cassiman, Diane Coemans and Eric Roelen.

The more than sixty bunkers, observation posts and artillery positions, connected by two kilometres of open or subterranean corridors, together form one of the best preserved parts of the German 'Atlantic Wall' defence line. It was built by the Germans during the Second World War from the French-Spanish border to Norway. On the domain you will also find the only preserved German coastal battery from the First World War. You can also discover the Pavilion where Prince Charles stayed until his death in 1983.

Fort Napoleon

Fort Napoleon was the setting for hundreds of years of history. The French were afraid to wait for the English, German soldiers used the impenetrable pentagon as a buffer against the Allies and Ostend rascals made their first love there. Few can still tell the story, but the broad walls of Fort Napoleon, which were silent witnesses to every laugh, tear and kiss in the fort. Time to let them speak in a completely renewed exhibition. Whispering, actually.

Discover the brand new story trail along the history of the fortress. Each time with the idea: "What if the walls could talk?" If you stand close enough to the immense stone walls, you will hear familiar and less familiar voices recounting what went on here. Bakers whose flour was stolen so soldiers could go to the girls of pleasure. The chilly misery of winters at the fort. Or the sneaky dates of our own Easterners. The light projections around the listening points make for the perfect Instagram photo. For children there is an adapted tour. Listening, whispering, enjoying the peace and amazed at the impressive architecture of the monument.

Fort Napoleon is easily accessible via the free ferry service or public transport. Parking is also provided. Afterwards, you can always visit the many new shops and eating places in Oosteroever. Enjoy the beautiful street art of The Crystal Ship or take a breath of fresh air on the beach. But don't forget to tell your own stories at the walls of the fortress. Who knows, maybe one day they'll whisper it.

During the walking documentary Marvin Gaye 'Midnight Love Tour' you will learn all about his comeback and how the monster hit 'Sexual Healing' came about.

Besides his master's voice you will also hear Jan Hautekiet, Patrick De Witte, Freddie Cousaert, Jamie Lidell, Arno, and many others.

Ensor walk

To discover the close bond between James Ensor and Ostend not only between the walls of (two particularly impressive) museums, there is also an interactive walking app that starts at the James Ensor House and takes you along the artist's favourite places in the city. Thanks to an application you as a user will be able to accompany Ensor on a walk through his home town. Along the way he tells not only about himself, but also about his friends and the rich history of Ostend. Ensor also gives explanations about Ostend today: he refers to buildings that were not there during his lifetime and gives up to date instructions to the app user ('...at the perfumery we turn left'). You pass places that are closely related to Ensor and the Ostend art scene (e.g. Spilliaert's studio), but also monumental Ostend hotspots such as the Mariners' Monument or the Festive and Cultural Palace. The app is available in five languages (Dutch, French, German, English and Spanish) and can be downloaded for free from the App Store. You pay a one-time fee of $5.49 to unlock the full walk. When you visit The James Ensor House you get the walk for free.

Steve Bauwens - Warandetoren 5

Warande Tower

With its long curved blades, referring to the typical marram grass, the Warande Tower is a striking and slender appearance. From the base (7 meters) you get a nice view of the Warande Dunes, a very valuable nature reserve with special plants and animals. Those who climb to the top (20 metres) can gaze, like a sailor in his crow's nest, at the horizon: Middelkerke and Westende, the vast polders, many Beaufort works of art and of course the sea...

The steel structure was built on top of the remains of the old water tower. It disappeared but not its original function. A large part of Middelkerke is still supplied with drinking water from here.

The construction of the Warande Tower is an initiative of the municipality of Middelkerke with the support of the Province of West-Flanders, Westtoer and Farys.

Coastal histories

The museum 'Kusthistories' is highly recommended. You step into the history of coastal tourism on the Belgian coast. Today, holidays on the coast are commonplace. It was different once. Old swimwear, souvenirs, an old tram, 'bum carts', unique films, beautiful scenery, and much more.

Raversijde & Atlantic Wall

This part of the old defence line, which the Germans built to protect the mainland against invasion, has been well preserved in the dunes of Raversijde. Visit these fortifications from the first and second world wars.
